The More Things Change, The More They Stay…

There is and have been times when we look at things as if this was the first time we have ever seen anything like this.  Crazy thing is, if you have been around Sports long enough, it’s just a matter of time before things come back around.  The NBA is pretty much more about the player than it is the teams.  Sure, there are some teams that have the elite dynasty feel and tradition to them.  Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, Spurs are the main ones that come to mind.  Those are the elite franchises over the inception of the NBA.  They had the players though, Magic, Bird, Jordan, Pippen, Russell, Chamberlain, Duncan, Robinson, Pierce, Garnett, Kobe and Shaq.  So yes, they did have the franchises but fuck did they have the players in there or what.

This is a league that sells its stars better than any other but I am sitting here watching the Celtics just dominate game 1 of the eastern conference finals against in my opinion the GOAT of the NBA in Lebron James.  Thinking this is a team without Kyrie and Hayward.  I wrote them off being a team that could win the East when those injuries happened.  Now I do think they have the best coach in the NBA not names Popovich.  Still though, to beat the Cavs I was like no fucking way.  I did like them against the 76ers, not to win the first 3 games but still to win the series and was like holy shit when they took out the best young talented team in the 76ers.

So, as I was watching this game going who is this team; you know what it’s the 2004 Detroit Pistons.  Yes, they did have a decent star in Rasheed Wallace but that role could easily be played by Al Horford on the Celtics just minus the technical and chaos.  Both teams are tough as nails defensively.  Larry Brown was an excellent coach back in his day a lot like Stevens is now and both were the perfect coaches for the team that they have in front of them right now.  One of the main differences is you saw it coming with the Pistons. They were good for a few years and then broke through and beat a much more talented Laker team.  Pistons did it just by out playing the Lakers and that is exactly what we are seeing the Celtics do with the Cavs right now.  I can’t even rule out that they won’t do the same thing to the Warriors or Rockets if they play them in the finals.  Pistons were huge underdog when they played the Lakers in the finals and the Celtics before game 1 today were a 20-1 underdog to win it all.  So why not just take a shot, Wood and I did.  They are great to watch, team defense, 6 players average double digit scoring.  This is the epitome of a team.

Make no mistake of it I totally believe the Western Conference will win this championship just like I believed Kobe, Shaq, Karl Malone and Gary Payton would beat Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace. But I was wrong then and I could be wrong again.  Just like we have seen in the past and looks all too familiar now.  Also, the question will be asked a lot does Kyrie and Hayward make this team a better team or a worse team.  I can see blogs in the future around that especially if this team wins it all like the Pistons once did.
